Retirement is one of those goals most just blurt out when they talk about financial goals. It’s the kind of thing thrown out when talking about money. It’s something every personal finance article says we should be worried about, so we do.
Did deeper and most people don’t have a clue what they want “retirement” to look like. Ask them when and they throw out the typical answer “62” or “65.” Ask them why and they’ll likely say “I want the freedom to do what I want to do, when I want to do it.” Ask them what the what is and you’re likely to get general answers but nothing specific.
If you really want to gain traction on retiring, start focusing on creating a crystal clear image of what it is for you. Through out the articles with stock photos of couples on a beach and the fancy marketing brochures of financial firms and dream about your life. How would you live life, on your own terms? What does having the freedom to do the things you want to do look? What are those things? Who are you doing them with??
I was on a call today with Robert Mallon and Bill Watkins from the Rusty Lion Academy. They reminded me of an important fact. You’ll only be able to achieve something when the driving forces pulling you towards it are greater than the restraining forces keeping you where you’re at. The fuel for those driving forces is the crystal clear picture of what an amazing retirement means to you.
Figure out what an amazing retirement really looks like for you and your family. Dream about it. Own it as a family. Make it something worth working for and you’ll get traction.
